PJC Light Studio – Winner of LuxLive 2017 retail category

The new store for concept-led luxury fashion and accessories brand Varana has very low ceiling heights (2.27m in some locations) and is spread over four floors, with a long and narrow footprint on each level.

Initial surveys confirmed that the false ceilings had limited available space for the lighting due to other services and structural beams so PJC Light Studio needed to develop a lighting concept that could work around these challenges to provide the correct balance of light while providing the flexibility to respond to changing retail displays below and to create an inviting high end environment.

To overcome these challenges the company developed lighting solutions using a series of complementary ‘layers’ of light:
1. An integrated concealed linear LED uplight detail along the top of the shopfit perimeter wall to uplight the ceiling and create a feeling of brightness to overcome the low ceilings.
2. A low level linear LED detail to uplight the perimeter shopfit wall at low level to aid the feeling of brightness.
3. Linear trimless ceiling track with miniature LED spotlights to front light the retail displays.
4. Integrated shelf lighting to light the displays and eliminate shadows from the shelf above.
5. Wall wash to back of store to brighten the atrium levels and rear wall of the store to draw the attention through the retail space.
6. Spotlights lighting through the rattan shelves to cast shadows like rays of sunlight.

With such low ceiling heights there was a risk that the track spotlights in the ceiling would feel too close and claustrophobic. With no time for mock-ups, PJC had to rely heavily on sectional studies.

PJC specified a simple analogue control system from Multiload to create different scenes for daytime, evening and events.

All lighting is high efficacy LED with 3000K colour temperature, excellent binning of maximum 2 Macadam steps and a high CRI +90 along with excellent R9 and R12 values to reproduce vibrant colours at the red/orange and blue areas of the spectrum.
