Aspirations to make buildings more ‘intelligent’ are largely dependent on the application of what might be referred to as ‘smart’ technologies. Such technologies are developing rapidly in many areas that relate to the control and management of buildings and lighting is clearly one of the principal areas for attention.

It is no exaggeration to say that lighting control is undergoing a transformation, in terms of both the way control is achieved and the capability of doing more than simply controlling the lighting. As a result, electrical contractors have an opportunity to provide better, more tailored solutions that add value for end clients in a number of ways.

A good example of the closer integration between lighting control and other networks is the increasing use of software as a gateway between the internet protocol (IP) used on the general network and the DALI protocol on the lighting control system. All that users need to do is type in the appropriate IP address and they are able to control individual lights, change lighting scenes and manage every aspect of the system.

No-nonsense lighting control

It is important to ensure the lighting control interface is as simple as possible so that non-specialists are able to take advantage of this increased control. This is an important aspect of intelligent buildings: they need to be easy to manage by non-specialists or much of that intelligence will not be used to its full potential.

For the building operator, a further benefit is that the ability to reconfigure their own lighting avoids the need to pay for an expensive controls specialist every time minor changes to the lighting are required.

The LIMO (Light-Modernisation) Set has been launched by Thorn Lighting to provide a fast and efficient way of replacing inefficient luminaires with the latest LED technology, using the ready2mains (r2m) gateway technology from Tridonic.

Lighting can be modified and upgraded quickly while business carries on as usual – downtime causes problems, which is an issue not only in factories, but also in offices.

The LIMO Set is an easy-to-install, efficient way of reducing operating costs, providing optimum lighting conditions and consuming up to 80% less energy. Thorn’s modernisation solution for office lighting is based on a combination of energy-efficient LED luminaires and smart lighting management, and is suitable for various applications from individual and open-plan offices through to conference halls and the surrounding meeting areas.

All-in-one solution

Thorn’s LIMO Set has everything required to convert existing lighting to high-efficiency, controllable LED office lighting in a single pack – from the lighting control components, communication gateway and presence detection, daylight control and dimming, through to the luminaires themselves.

Lighting can be modified or upgraded quickly because installation is achieved by simply inserting the r2m gateway and combi-sensor into the existing installation. This will efficiently control up to 15 luminaires without any additional wiring and provide reducing operating costs, optimum lighting conditions and up to 80% less energy consumption.

The LIMO Set is currently available with Thorn’s Omega and Chalice ranges. Omega and Omega Pro are LED flat panel luminaires that can be integrated directly into the ceiling profile, ensuring an attractive design. The mounting options can be adapted to any space and the fittings have adjustable mounting options for through-life flexibility.

Omega Pro offers comfort and style with an edge-lit flat panel incorporating the Glare ProTech prismatic optic for high performance optical and glare control. It is a direct replacement for 4x18W T26 (T8) recessed luminaires and complies with EN 12464 office lighting norms.

Chalice is an LED downlight available in two sizes with up to 2,800 lumens, offering a direct energy efficient replacement for CFL solutions. Chalice Pro is a high performance LED downlight offering class leading efficiency and a long 50,000-hour LED lifetime and UGR <19, so it is suitable for office lighting applications.

Digital commands via r2m technology

The lighting management components of the LIMO Set use r2m technology, which transmits digital control signals between sensor, gateway and LED luminaire via the existing power cables, with no rewiring necessary for additional lighting management. The technology uses simple phase-cuts to send digital commands via the mains wiring, which means that there are no powerline problems in the classical sense because the gateway protects supply lines from system incidents.

Dimming capabilities are achieved without a control cable to the luminaires and up to 15 r2m luminaires (or maximum 400VA) can be controlled via broadcast control for all connected luminaires in that group.

Thorn’s LIMO Set is perfect for use in offices and other workspaces previously equipped with no independent lighting management system and is the ideal solution for energy-efficient workspaces.
